Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is one of the main complications of the pathological use of alcohol and can occur in up to 50% of patients who reduce or stop using alcohol. It is characterized by a state of autonomic hyperactivation and has high morbidity and mortality due to its association with aspiration pneumonia, hydro electrolytic disorders, arrhythmias, seizures and delirium tremens. The main objective of this article is to introduce the undergraduate medical student and the non-specialist physician to the identification and proper management of this condition. The authors discuss epidemiological, etiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of AWS.
