The dog-eat-dog world and the children in Anton Chekhov and Graciliano Ramos

In this essay, two important female dogs from literature are contrasted: Kashtanka, by Anton Chekhov, and Baleia, by Graciliano Ramos. An interpretative immersion is made in the dog-eat-dog world of both, marked by vicissitudes, such as hunger and death, as well as by joys, such as those generated by the love they offer to their owners and receive from them (Georges, the circus artist, in Kashtanka, and the family of migrants, in Vidas secas). This text takes into consideration the relationship between these little dogs and children, full of connection and affection (especially with the older boy) in Graciliano's text, and surrounded by mistreatment and sadism (with the boy Fiediuschka) in Chekhov's writing. In these cases, it seems that Ramos and Chekhov wanted to present to the readers, respectively, a model and an anti-model of how animals should be treated. The theme addressed is hunger, both from body and soul (the appetite for knowledge of the children in Vidas secas and the curiosity that is paired with Kashtanka's fear of death). Before these analyses, Graciliano Ramos, as a reader of Russian literature, mainly Chekhov, is introduced.
